Some lesser known/interesting facts about Delhi Metro !

  1. Re-generative Braking power : Awesomeness
112,500 megawatt hours of electricity generated through the use of regenerative braking systems between 2004 and 2007 by our Delhi Metro.
In 2008, DMRC had become the first Metro or Railway project in the world to be registered by the United Nations under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) which has enabled it to claim carbon credits.
Delhi Metro has earned Rs 9.5 crs (9,55,27,441 INR) through earlier Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects i.e Regenerative braking* and modal shift* projects, between January, 2004 and 2012. The Gold Standard registration will help DMRC to earn 7000-7500 amount of VERs (credits) per annum for next ten years. Delhi Metro is also working on other projects to get them registered under Gold Standard.
What is Re-Generative Braking system?
Regenerative Braking: Under the regenerative braking system, whenever a train applies brakes, the kinetic energy released starts a machine known as converter-inverter. This machine acts as an electricity generator which supplies electrical energy back to the Over Head Electricity (OHE) lines. The regenerated electrical energy that is supplied back to the OHE is used by other accelerating trains in the same service line, thus saving overall energy in the system as about 30 % of electricity requirement is reduced.
2. Rain Water Harvesting
64 Station on various line + 11 other locations including depot are equipped with rain water harvesting. details
We should also contribute our equity toward this effort.

Leo established the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation

Well, do you know Leo established the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 with the purpose of protecting the Earth's last wild places and implementing solutions to build a more harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world?

In addition to this, he is also an honorary board member of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, IFAW.
He takes matters of the environment very seriously. From protecting sharks in California and elephants in Africa to supporting the transition of our society to clean, renewable energy, Leo has really taken environmental conservation by the helm.
Here's another fun fact: A journalist from TIME magazing once called Leo boring for being able to recite the names of 20 endangered species on earth from his memory. Here's the article if you want to read it, Breaking News, Analysis, Politics, Blogs, News Photos, Video, Tech Reviews - TIME.com
Here's something else about Leo and his love for the environment. DiCaprio celebrated his birthday in 2013 with a charity bash featuring people like Kanye West and was able to raise $3m for his environmental foundation. How about that!!
Besides the environment and his foundation, here are a few more interesting facts:
  1. His father is a comic book dealer
  2. Leo donated $2800 to Obama's presidential campaign, which is the highest an individual can contribute to a campaign.
  3. At one point of time, he and his closest buddy Mark Wahlberg could not see each other eye to eye.
  4. Do you know Leo is technically a father?! Well, on the sets of Blood Diamond, he adopted a South African baby girl he met in an orphanage and sends her a monthly check as well as speaks to her regularly over the phone.
  5. DiCaprio is a gay rights activist and in April 2013 donated $61,000 to GLAAD, an organization which promotes the image of LGBT people.
  6. In 2010, DiCaprio donated $1m to the Wildlife Conservation Society at Russia's tiger summit. DiCaprio's persistence in reaching the event after going through two plane delays caused Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to describe him as a "muzhik" or "real man"

Mind-blowing facts about Rahul Dravid

Mr. Perfectionist of Bollywood, Amir Khan’s romantic crime drama 2006 film “Fanaa” paid rich tributes to Mr. Dependable of the Indian Batting lineup.
A little kid - an aspiring cricketer who wants to be the next Rahul Dravid, named Rehan (Aamir Khan’s son in the movie, the little kid isn’t aware of it) greets Aamir Khan when he opens his eyes.
The first question that the little kid asks Aamir is, “Aap Rahul Dravid ko jaante hain?
(Translation - Do you know Rahul Dravid?)
Aamir’s face suggests he does but he does not reply to the young boy.
The boy then says - Rahul Dravid Rehan ke abba hain, kyu ki Rehan ke abba mar gaye hain. Ammi ne kaha ki Rehan, koi bhi abba chal sakta hai, to Rehan ne Rahul Dravid ko chun liya.
(Translation - Rahul Dravid is Rehan’s father, because Rehan’s father is no more and Ammi asked me to choose any father that would suit me, hence I selected Rahul Dravid)
This shocks Aamir because he knows the kid is his offspring.
The kid then asks Aamir, “Kya aap bhi Rahul Dravid ki tarah Mr. Dependable hain?
(Translation - Are you Mr. Dependable like Rahul Dravid?)
Aamir feels guilty at this point.
The kid says one last thing before the scene ends - Kya aap par bhi Rahul Dravid ki tarah bharosa kar sakte hain?
(Translation - Can we count on you like we can count on Rahul Dravid?)
Amazing tribute by bollywood fraternity.
This is interesting because Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly have both been referenced a lot of times in Bollywood but the directors of the film decided to glorify Rahul Dravid for once which is a treat for Dravid fans.

Chewing Gum is part of the US Army's field and combat rations.

Soldiers consume gum at a rate 5 times that of the national average.

The desire for gum continued with Americans as they went into war. As a part of their rations, American troops in WWII received gum. Indeed, the gum was an integral part of the rations, and every American GI received it for each meal.
  • It was lightweight, unaffected by temperature, stable for long periods of time, and was appealing.
  • Over 500 million sticks of gum were chewed by the soldiers every year, and this forced the Wrigley Company to only provide gum to the U.S. Army and Navy in 1944.
  • Sleep researcher Gary Kamimori invented caffeine gum, and the U.S. Army readily supplied this to its troops to help through the fatigue of military operations.
  • Each piece contained roughly the equivalent of a six-ounce cup of coffee, minus the difficulty of transport, need to go to the bathroom, and can be used in all kinds of temperatures.

you can see Africa from Spain!

A fact that sounds pretty ‘BS’ is that you can see Africa from Spain!
If you go to the Rock of Gibraltar (or the surrounding Spanish coast), you can look across the straight and see Morocco! It's interesting that that tiny stretch of water practically separates two different worlds, cultures, and continents.
I also find it interesting that very few people know that you can see Africa from Europe. I for one think that's kind of amazing!
